Nomulu and Vratalu - Telugu Hindu Rituals

Vratam (à°µ్à°°à°¤ం) means a spiritual vow or discipline observed on a particular day or during a specific festival. It can include fasting, pooja (ritual worship), and reading Vratakatha (sacred stories). Vratalu are generally performed during Karthika Masam (Karthika Month), Shravana Masam, Navaratri, Ekadashi, Varalakshmi Vratam, Kedareswara Vrata, Anantha Padmanabha Vrata, and more.

Nomu (à°¨ోà°®ు) refers to a fasting ritual observed with a specific intention — such as prosperity, marital harmony, good health, or the well-being of family. Women usually perform Nomulu on auspicious days like Mondays, Fridays, or full moon days (Pournima), depending on the deity being worshipped. Common examples include Santoshi Mata Nomu, Gowri Nomu, Sukravara Nomu (Friday Fasting), and Mangala Gowri Nomu. During the Nomu, devotees often read the Nomu Katha (Vrat Katha) — a sacred story associated with the ritual that narrates its significance and benefits.
